Home Battery Storage: Is It Worth It?

Published by C&T Smart Energy · March 2026

Battery storage is the upgrade that transforms a good solar system into a great one. But it's not right for everyone. Here's an honest look at the technology, the costs, and when it makes financial sense.

The Problem Solar Alone Doesn't Solve

Solar panels generate electricity when the sun shines — typically between 9am and 4pm on a clear day. But most households use the most electricity in the morning (7–9am) and evening (5–10pm). Without storage, you're exporting cheap solar energy to the grid and buying expensive grid electricity a few hours later.

The export rate under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is typically 4–6p/kWh. The import rate is around 24p/kWh. Every unit you export and then re-import costs you roughly 18–20p. A battery eliminates most of that gap.

How Home Battery Storage Works

A home battery connects to your solar inverter and stores surplus electricity generated during the day. When your solar generation drops — in the evening, on cloudy days, or overnight — the battery discharges to power your home. Smart battery systems can also charge from the grid during cheap overnight tariff periods (like Octopus Go), giving you even greater control.

Battery Sizes and What They Mean

5 kWh

Good for 1–2 person households. Covers evening use.

~£2,500
10 kWh

Ideal for families. Covers most evening and overnight use.

~£4,500
15+ kWh

High-usage homes or EV charging. Near-total grid independence.

~£7,000+

Prices are indicative. Exact costs depend on brand, installation complexity, and whether solar is being added simultaneously.

The Financial Case

A 10kWh battery added to a 4kW solar system typically increases annual savings from £350–£450 (solar only) to £700–£900 (solar + battery). At that rate, a £4,500 battery pays for itself in 5–8 years — and most modern lithium batteries are warranted for 10 years with a 25+ year lifespan.
